14 Things to Look For to Stay Safe While Dating

"Love is blind" is quite true in high school. Students don't see jealousy, power and control for what it is. Instead, they see it as love. Here are warning signs.

From Innocent to Abused

High school students dream for the perfect relationship and often fall victim to a future abuser--male or female. While males are more prevalent, females can become abusive, as well.

The following series is one that I teach to 7th graders in my middle school followed by the educational video, But He Loves Me. It is something my students remember far into the future. These 14 characteristics come directly from a domestic abuse shelter. Statistics state that four out of 10 relationships result in some form of abuse. The following is a great educational tool for middle school and high school students.

Warning Signs

There are many warning signs that are red flags for students to notice. They can easily be mistaken for "love" or "caring." However, it is more about jealousy, power and control. Power and control leads to abuse. High school students who have not experienced abuse or control are very vulnerable. Domestic abuse shelters are filled with men and women running from individuals having the characteristics in the following articles.
